In today’s interconnected world, fostering cross-border collaboration is crucial for driving innovation and growth. Since September 2023, more than 40 startups from Karnataka have benefited from the state government's Global Innovation Alliance – Market Access Programme (GIA-MAP).

Spearheaded by the Department of Electronics, IT-BT (Information Technology - Biotechnology), the initiative has been instrumental in enabling these startups to successfully tap into international markets.

According to officials, 10 startups each have entered the markets of the UAE, Singapore, and Australia, while seven have made their mark in Belgium. These startups belong to sectors such as deep tech, aerospace and defense, ed-tech, life sciences, med-tech, cybersecurity, and more.

Notable names include DocketRun Tech Private Limited, VividSparks IT Solutions Pvt Ltd, Toutche Electric, Rootskart, RDL Technologies Pvt. Ltd., and Cosmos Bio Private Limited. Under GIA-MAP, selected startups benefit from financial assistance, with up to 80% reimbursement of actual costs incurred for flights, accommodation, and visa fees.

The reimbursement is divided into two phases: the first half is disbursed after the delegation visit, while the remaining half is provided upon meeting milestones such as stakeholder meetings and measurable progress in market access.

The Global Innovation Alliance (GIA) Market Access Programme exemplifies Karnataka's commitment to bridging emerging startups with international markets. As part of the broader Global Innovation Alliance initiative, GIA-MAP seeks to position Karnataka—and by extension, India—as a global hub for innovation and technology.

Recognizing the challenges faced by startups and small businesses when entering international markets, such as limited market knowledge, regulatory hurdles, and restricted access to networks, the program provides critical support.

Indian startups in sectors like fintech, AI, med-tech, and biotech have successfully expanded to international markets, including Germany, the UK, Switzerland, Australia, and France, through this initiative.

Established by the Government of Karnataka, GIA-MAP aligns with India’s vision of building a globally competitive startup ecosystem. By fostering partnerships between local entrepreneurs and international stakeholders, the program accelerates market entry and facilitates knowledge exchange and technological advancements.

Bengaluru has also emerged as a top destination for international companies, particularly from France, Finland, and the Netherlands.

The city hosts key offices and research centers for companies like Capgemini, Gemalto (digital security), Technicolor (digital animation), and 3DS (visual identity). Atos, which employs around 20 percent of its global workforce in India, also operates from Bengaluru.

Finnish companies like Nokia and Kone, as well as Dutch firms like Shell and Philips, have research centers in the city. These organizations not only conduct cutting-edge research but also mentor Indian startups.
