In a startling online scam, two men from Gurgaon, Aniket Kalra, 25, and Himanshu Kumar, 23, were arrested for hacking into a woman's Swiggy account and placing orders totaling over Rs 97,000.
The duo exploited the account linked to the victim's Lazy Pay service, leading to a significant financial loss for the 26-year-old woman from Sultanpur.
The scammers employed an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system to deceive the victim with a late-night call, falsely alerting her of unauthorized access attempts on her Swiggy account. This sophisticated trickery prompted the woman to unwittingly share her personal details, enabling the fraudsters to execute their scheme.
Kalra, who previously worked as a delivery boy for Zomato and Swiggy, confessed to reselling groceries bought online at discounted rates for profit.
He, along with an accomplice named Ansh from Punjab, whom he met on Telegram, targeted individuals by hacking their Swiggy accounts through pre-recorded IVR calls. These calls, masquerading as official Swiggy communications, warned the victims about account breaches, coaxing them into divulging sensitive information.
The police started the investigation and unraveled the operation following a detailed analysis of call records and financial transactions linked to the fraudulent activities. The orders placed using the hacked account were delivered in Gurugram, with the delivery contact registered under a fake identity.
Aniket and Himanshu's arrest was facilitated by tracking the mobile device used in the scam, pinpointing their location in Gurugram.
During interrogation, it was revealed that the duo sold the fraudulently obtained grocery items at a lower market price, sharing profits with their associate Ansh through cash deposits and various UPI IDs. Himanshu, who owns a medical shop in Gurugram, played a crucial role in laundering the proceeds of their criminal enterprise.
