Ahmedabad-based Nav Wireless Technologies (NavTech), a leader in Light Fidelity (LiFi) technology, has signed an MoU with the Space Applications Centre (SAC) of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

According to the company's statement, the partnership aims to leverage light-based high-speed communication for satellite communication in space.

SAC, a major centre of ISRO, will utilize this innovative technology to facilitate high-speed secure quantum key communication from base stations to satellites in space and terrestrial communication.

Utilizing LiFi for secure and efficient space communication

The development comes at a time when space agencies globally are transitioning to optical wireless technologies, moving away from Radio Frequency for space communication.

SAC plans to employ this technology to execute quantum key distribution (QKD) and pointing acquisition and tracking (PAT) for satellite-to-satellite communications in space.

Notably, the technological adoption is slated to be integrated into ISRO’s forthcoming space exploration programs, providing a robust and secure communication channel that is pivotal for the success of these missions, the release notes.

A three-year tenure to explore and implement LiFi Technology

The MoU signed between SAC/ISRO and Nav Wireless Technologies, has a tenure of three years. Recommended by the Department of Telecom (DoT), Nav Wireless Technologies is the first company in India to provide this technology to SAC, ISRO.

Hardik Soni, co-founder and CTO of Nav Wireless Technologies, said, “It is a proud moment for Nav Wireless Technologies as it will contribute to the great projects of ISRO. Very few space agencies in the world are currently using LiFi technology for secured communication between base stations and for satellite communications around the globe.”

What is the potential and practicality of LiFi Technology in India?

LiFi, or Light Fidelity, employs a light beam spectrum to transmit data in both indoor and outdoor settings, offering ultra-fast data connections.

This proves particularly beneficial in urban locales with crowded radio spectra and in rural areas where fiber optic cables or networks may be lacking.

The company claimed that it has been a trailblazer in LiFi research and development in India for over a year, standing as the sole registered entity in the nation dedicated to probing the potentialities of LiFi technology.
