Amazon Prime Video unveils its latest content slate with 70 series and movies

Ecommerce giant Amazon's OTT unit Amazon Prime Video announced to stream close to 70 series and movies on its platform, with most of them premiering on the service over the next two years

The extensive lineup includes 40 original series and movies, alongside 29 films slated for streaming after their theatrical release. The upcoming originals, which span Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu languages, aims to cater to a diverse set of preferences, promising something for every household, as per the company's statement.

Focused on Indian customers

Sushant Sreeram, the country director for Prime Video in India, “At Prime Video, it has been our focus to super-serve Indian customers with the best of entertainment across formats. From clutter-breaking Original series and movies, direct-to-service premieres to post-theatrical launches of some of the biggest hits across languages, our goal is to be the first choice of entertainment for every customer."

Aparna Purohit, head of Originals for India and Southeast Asia, highlighted Prime Video's success in bringing Indian content to a global audience. She noted that in 2023, Prime's content was watched in over 210 countries each week, consistently ranking in the top 10 on Prime Video worldwide.

Diverse genres

The new content slate promises a mix of genres, including thrillers, dramas, comedies, horror, unscripted shows, young adult stories, action, and musical dramas. The diversity, according to the company, aims to showcase the richness of Indian storytelling on the global stage.

"As the home for storytellers and talent, we are also excited to partner with some of the most prolific names in Indian entertainment, and empower dynamic, new voices, to create stories that are fresh, powerful, inspiring and entertaining,” Purohit added.

Enhancing partnerships amid regulatory challenges

In addition to expanding its content offerings, Prime Video has been enhancing its product suite, including a partnership with FanCode for sports content. However, the platform also faced a subscription price hike and regulatory challenges, with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting blocking several OTT platforms for inappropriate content.

Prime Video, along with other OTT platforms, has been advised to independently review content for obscenity and violence before it is released online.
