Angry customer sets Ather electric scooter on fire

A frustrated electric scooter owner set his Ather 450X vehicle ablaze outside a showroom in Ambattur, Chennai, on Wednesday, alleging unresolved service issues.

The incident drew public attention and caused a traffic jam before the police intervened. Parthasarathy, a resident of Thirumullaivayal, said he purchased the scooter for Rs 1.8 lakh but encountered persistent problems from the outset.

Despite repeated visits to the service centre, he alleged that the issues were not resolved. Feeling ignored by the showroom staff, he brought the vehicle to the premises and set it on fire.

Bystanders quickly extinguished the flames to prevent further escalation, and a video of the incident surfaced online, showing Parthasarathy voicing his complaints to police officers and speaking with a woman who tried to calm him down.

Advertisment

The incident caused heavy traffic near the showroom, which prompted the police to manage the crowd and restore order. Showroom representatives assured Parthasarathy that the matter would be addressed urgently and took the scooter for a detailed inspection, particularly to assess any damage to its battery pack, which could pose safety risks.
