Ather Energy

Bengaluru-based EV startup Ather Energy, which battles with Ola Electric, has entered into a strategic partnership with Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Ltd.

The partnership will see Amara Raja's subsidiary, Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies, develop and supply Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) lithium-ion cells tailored for Ather's electric scooters.

Local production at upcoming gigafactory

As part of the partnership, the lithium-ion cells will be produced locally at Amara Raja Energy & Mobility’s upcoming gigafactory in Divitipally, Telangana.

Advertisment

Amara Raja has announced a substantial investment of Rs 9,500 crore to establish this 16 GWh capacity facility.

The move aligns with India's broader goal of achieving self-sufficiency in clean and green energy, particularly in the rapidly growing two-wheeler EV market, which is projected to reach 40% penetration by 2030.

Leadership comments

Tarun Mehta, co-founder and CEO of Ather Energy, said, "Our focus has always been on designing and building products from scratch in India, with most of our components, aside from cells, sourced domestically. Now, we’re taking a significant step forward by promoting homegrown cell technology. This will help us optimize costs and enable us to source lithium-ion cells tailored to Ather’s specific requirements, further enhancing our ability to innovate and scale efficiently."

Vikramaditya Gourineni, executive director of Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Ltd, said, "At Amara Raja, we have significantly progressed in our efforts to build world-class facilities to manufacture cell and battery packs customized for Indian conditions. Our recent collaboration with Gotion-InoBat will accelerate our efforts towards the same. We are proud to partner with Ather and together we will focus on building market-relevant solutions in India’s journey towards indigenization of electric vehicle technologies."

Expansion and innovation in manufacturing

Ather Energy currently operates two manufacturing facilities in Hosur, Tamil Nadu—one dedicated to battery production and the other to vehicle assembly.

Additionally, the EV major recently announced plans to invest Rs 2,000 crore to establish its third manufacturing plant in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. The EV maker will establish the facility in Aurangabad Industrial City (AURIC).
