Bank manager rejects leave request

A senior employee at a large Indian private bank resigned after her manager rejected her request for a few days of leave to care for her critically ill mother, telling her to “put your mother in a medical or shelter home and come to the office,” according to a post that has gone viral on Reddit.

The woman, who sought time off after her mother reportedly became seriously ill due to incorrect medication, was given an ultimatum to either return to work or stay with her family.

She chose to remain with her mother and later quit her job, despite having worked at the bank for several years.

The incident, shared on the r/IndianWorkplace forum, triggered widespread outrage online, with many users calling it an example of toxic workplace culture in parts of India’s corporate sector.

“Sadly some managers run bank branches like a proprietorship firm. Even though the bank themselves dont want them to. I had such a manager she harassed everyone, esp the ones who needed the job, she couldn't harass me as i was working there out of my will not not because i wanted the money. One fine day i blasted her for her attitude towards a junior officer. She felt very insulted and threw things around in her cabin, i just stood out n saw it amusingly. Later i resigned in a week citing what a sh1tty manager she was. Its been severam years, shes still with the bank and i m happy n managing my business,” a user wrote.

“Ask the manager to give this suggestion in written, and watch his tone change and ego crumble,” another wrote.

“Damn, I empathise with her and the feelings that she had to go through. There should be some legal way to get back at this crude kind of exploitation,” a third expressed.

“If the company cannot emphasize with her, then it's not worth for any loyal employee to stay there. She did the right thing and now she will find a much better job. If the manager was in her situation, he would have also choosen his mother over work,” another added.
