Table Space Co-founder and CEO Amit Banerji

In a tragic loss for the Indian startup community, Table Space co-founder and CEO Amit Banerji has died of a heart attack at the age of 44.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mr Amit Banerji, our Founder, Chairman, and CEO... His impact on the company, its people and the industry will be lasting, and he will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and partners,” a company statement read.

Based in Bengaluru, Banerji was a seasoned professional who previously spent more than 13 years at Accenture, leaving his position as managing director of corporate real estate in India before co-founding Table Space in 2017 with Karan Chopra.

Banerji’s background included deep expertise in technology and real estate, skills he applied to scale Table Space into a leading managed workspace operator.

Table Space's IPO plans

Alongside his co-founders, who include Vice Chairman Karan Chopra and President Kunal Mehra, Banerji helped the company raise significant capital—around $330 million in total, including a $300 million commitment from Hillhouse Capital. Most recently, Table Space reported a 35% revenue jump to Rs 919 crore in FY24, spurred by higher occupancy and added leasable areas.

Media reports suggest that Table Space had ambitious plans to list publicly and was targeting a valuation of $2.5 billion or more for a proposed IPO in 2025.

According to market intelligence firm Tracxn, the startup’s most recent funding round in August 2024 placed its valuation at $480 million. Under Banerji’s leadership, the firm was also said to have hired Axis as a book runner for a potential listing.

Apurva Chamaria's confirms the news

News of Banerji’s passing was first reported by VCCircle and confirmed by Apurva Chamaria, Global Head of Venture Capital & Startups at Google, in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Banerji’s death marks another premature loss in the Indian startup scene, which has recently witnessed the untimely passings of Pepperfry co-founder Ambareesh Murty, Good Capital co-founder Rohan Malhotra, and Epigamia co-founder Rohan Mirchandani.
