The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) today commenced operations on the entire Purple Line of Namma Metro, connecting Challaghatta to Kengeri on one end and Baiyappanahalli to Whitefield on the other.

Notably, the services, which began at 5 a.m. on Monday, were inaugurated without any formal ceremony or VIP presence, marking a first in the history of the BMRCL.

How will the new service impact commuters and traffic?

The entire Purple Line, which encompasses 37 stations and covers a distance of 42.5 km promises to alleviate severe traffic congestion during peak hours, especially in areas like Whitefield that house numerous tech parks and employ individuals from various parts of the city. The metro train takes 80 minutes to travel from Challaghatta to Whitefield, with a ticket fare set at Rs 57.

The expectations from the new purple line

The BMRCL has projected that the metro’s ridership will surge by 75,000 to 80,000 once the entire line becomes operational. The train services on the Purple Line will commence at 5 a.m. daily, with the last train departing at 10.45 p.m. from the Kadugodi (Whitefield) station.

During morning peak hours, trains will run at a frequency of 5 to 10 minutes on the Purple Line, and between the Majestic station and MG Road, a train will be available every three minutes. During non-peak hours, trains will be available at a frequency of 8 to 15 minutes.

How BMTC is supporting the new metro line?

In support of the new metro line, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has initiated feeder services from the KR Puram metro station to Central Silk Board, deploying 15 buses that were previously operated between Byappanahalli and K R Puram.

“We are going to run more buses as feeder services from K R Puram. By afternoon, detailed information on the schedule of proposed feeder services will be shared." The Purple Line is anticipated to significantly enhance public transport in Bengaluru, providing a robust and efficient commuting option for the city’s residents,"  BMTC official said.

Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan said Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed a special concern towards this Purple Line and directed the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials to launch it immediately.

It's worth mentioning that the move comes at a time when Bengaluru is witnessing an urgent need to enhance public transport facilities as it continues to face traffic and infrastructural issues.
