Troubled Byju’s flagship Android app has been pulled from the Google Play Store, and its website stripped down to a bare landing page, cutting off access for millions of students across India. Users with the app already installed have reported an inability to stream video content or use paid services. Some of the company’s content pages have also disappeared from the search results.
According to a Moneycontrol report, Byju's has defaulted on cloud infrastructure payments, prompting Amazon-owned AWS to pause several backend services.
“There have been payment delays to AWS, and some services have been paused as a result. App content, website functionality, and video delivery are currently down,” the publication reported, citing sources.
Even the Think & Learn Premium app—listed separately on the Play Store—has been rendered largely unusable, according to multiple user complaints. While the iOS version remains available on Apple’s App Store, key features across platforms have stopped functioning due to backend disruptions. Other apps like Byju’s Exam Prep still remain active for now.
These technical outages mark a new low point for a company that was once one of the world's top edtech startups. Byju’s, founded in 2011 by teacher-turned-entrepreneur Byju Raveendran, rode a wave of pandemic-era growth to become India’s most valuable startup, peaking at a $22 billion valuation. But that trajectory reversed sharply after a series of governance lapses, investor disputes, missed debt payments, and mass layoffs.
In recent months, Raveendran has tried to reclaim control of the narrative. In multiple interviews and social media posts, he outlined plans for “Byju’s 3.0,” promising a refocus on AI-powered learning tools and a recommitment to classroom outcomes. He has acknowledged strategic mistakes, including the firm’s decision to borrow heavily in pursuit of rapid global expansion.
“We don't belong in courtrooms. We belong in classrooms,” he told in an ANI podcast.
