Cityflo, a Mumbai-based premium daily commute service, is expanding its operations with the addition of 100 custom-built buses developed in partnership with Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles (VECV).
The company said the move aims to improve service agility, reduce travel times, and enable faster route expansion across the city.
The new 27-seater fleet marks a significant shift in urban transit, allowing Cityflo to launch routes more quickly and increase service frequency. The compact design ensures faster occupancy rates, making operations more sustainable in high-demand areas, the release notes.
"One of the biggest constraints in launching new routes is ensuring optimal occupancy from day one. These buses allow us to do just that—by reaching full capacity faster, we can launch and sustain more routes across the city at an accelerated pace," said Jerin Venad, Founder & CEO of Cityflo.
He added that there is a growing demand for smaller, high-frequency routes that efficiently connect business districts without unnecessary detours.
Reducing travel times in a congested city
With Mumbai’s vehicle count nearing five million and over 650 new vehicles hitting the roads daily, traffic congestion remains a pressing challenge. Cityflo's smaller, more manoeuvrable fleet is designed to navigate the city's dense roadways, reducing commute times for professionals.
"In a city where commuters often spend over an hour in transit, these 27-seater buses allow us to cut journey times by up to 13%. This means customers get a service that's as convenient as their own vehicle, but with the added benefit of reaching their destination faster," said Venad.
Focused on offering flexible transport options
Beyond rush hour commutes, Cityflo's expanded fleet will cater to increasing demand for non-peak hour rides, offering flexible transport options for professionals with variable work schedules. The smaller fleet format allows for more adaptive scheduling, ensuring a consistent and reliable service throughout the day.
"Urban transit is evolving, and Cityflo is pioneering a commuter-first approach that balances comfort, speed, and efficiency," said Venad.
Suresh Chettiar, Executive Vice President of Bus Division, VECV, said, "We take pride in engineering passenger-friendly vehicles that not only deliver superior value to operators but are also designed for the changing dynamics of modern cities. This collaboration with Cityflo marks an important milestone in our journey to create smarter, more sustainable transit options."
Aiming to deploy 500 buses
The company aims to deploy 500 buses across five metro cities by 2026, further optimizing business district connectivity nationwide. Currently, Cityflo helps replace approximately 800,000 car trips annually, reducing traffic congestion and cutting carbon emissions by over 27,422 tons per year.
