US-based AI company Anthropic has formally opened its first office in India, marking a deeper push into what it now describes as its second-largest market globally for Claude.ai.
The new office in Bengaluru is the company’s second in Asia after Tokyo and will serve as a hub for enterprise, startup and public-sector partnerships.
India has emerged as a critical growth market for Claude. Nearly 50 percent of Claude usage in the country comprises computer and mathematical tasks, including application development, system modernisation and production software deployment. Educational and instructional use cases account for 12 percent of usage.
“India represents one of the world’s most promising opportunities to bring the benefits of responsible AI to vastly more people and enterprises,” said Irina Ghose, Managing Director of India, Anthropic. “Already, it’s home to extraordinary technical talent, digital infrastructure at scale, and a proven track record of using technology to improve people’s lives.”
Ghose, who previously served as Managing Director of Microsoft India, will lead the Bengaluru office. The company is hiring across sales, management and development roles. Anthropic said its run-rate revenue in India has doubled since it first announced its expansion plans in October 2025.
Enterprise and startup adoption
Anthropic said the growth reflects broad-based adoption across large enterprises, digital-native companies and early-stage startups.
Air India is using Claude Code to help developers ship custom software faster and at lower cost as part of a wider effort to deploy agentic AI across operations. CRED reported achieving two times faster feature delivery and 10 percent better test coverage with Claude Code. Cognizant is deploying Claude to 350,000 employees globally to modernise legacy systems, accelerate software development and support AI adoption for enterprise clients.
Among startups, Razorpay has integrated AI into its risk systems, decision-making processes and operations. Enterpret uses Claude to power its AI assistant and builds daily with Claude Code. The company has also shipped a Model Context Protocol integration that brings customer insights directly into Claude. Emergent, an AI-powered platform that enables users to build software using plain-language prompts, reached $25 million in annual recurring revenue and two million users in under five months, built entirely with Claude.
Anthropic said it will offer applied AI expertise to enterprise customers, digital-native firms and startups in India to help them design, build and scale Claude-powered solutions tailored to business requirements.
Expanding into education and public systems
Educational use cases form a growing part of Claude’s India footprint. Pratham, one of India’s largest education nonprofits, has chosen Anthropic as its first strategic AI lab partner. Its Anytime Testing Machine, powered by Claude, is being piloted with 1,500 students across 20 schools and is expected to expand to 100 schools by the end of 2026. The system was earlier adapted for more than 5,000 learners in Pratham’s Second Chance programme, which supports women who have dropped out of formal schooling.
Anthropic is also collaborating with Central Square Foundation to provide technical expertise, mentorship and API credits to organisations building AI-enabled tools such as personalised tutors, teacher coaching solutions and assessment-driven instruction aimed at underserved communities.
In the judiciary, where India has around 50 million pending court cases, Anthropic is supporting Adalat AI to launch a national WhatsApp helpline that provides instant case updates, translation, document summarisation and interactive querying of legal documents in Indian languages.
In agriculture, which accounts for nearly one-sixth of India’s economy and employs close to half the labour force, Anthropic is working with EkStep Foundation through the OpenAgriNet effort to deploy Claude in ways that expand access to expert knowledge.
