Cropin, an AI-driven agricultural intelligence firm, has entered into a partnership with Walmart to help the global retailer enhance its fresh produce sourcing solutions across the United States and South America.
The collaboration aims to bring greater predictability to Walmart's food supply chain by leveraging data and AI to improve yield forecasting, monitor crop health, and anticipate seasonal changes more accurately.
The initiative comes at a time when the global food supply chain faces increasing pressures from extreme weather events, market volatility, and geopolitical instability. By integrating AI-powered insights into sourcing decisions, Walmart hopes to mitigate risks associated with supply disruptions, improve produce availability, and reduce food waste.
"Tech innovation is what drives real-world solutions to move forward a globally resilient supply chain," said Kyle Carlyle, Vice President of Sourcing Innovation and Surety of Supply at Walmart.
"By collaborating with Cropin, we can further streamline sourcing practices and better predict yields using their real-time AI technology."
Technology to predict and prevent disruptions
Cropin's agri-intelligence platform uses real-time satellite data, machine learning, and AI-driven risk assessment to provide granular, localized insights into crop health, pest outbreaks, and extreme weather risks.
By offering predictive analytics on crop readiness, yield forecasts, and supply stability, the company aims to help Walmart and its suppliers optimize pricing strategies and improve product quality while ensuring sustainability.
The company's sustainability dashboard also enables businesses to track greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water usage, and deforestation impact, ensuring compliance with regulations such as the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
"In the era of AI-powered neural networks, Cropin is transforming how retailers and consumer goods companies source, assess, and secure their supply chains," said Krishna Kumar, Founder and CEO of Cropin. "We are deeply excited about delivering on our commitments to help shape a new era of agri-food sourcing."
A strategic shift in food retailing
The partnership underscores Walmart’s growing focus on technology-driven supply chain transformation. The retailer has been increasingly investing in data-driven tools to enhance efficiency across its food ecosystem, particularly as climate change and supply chain disruptions pose greater risks to fresh produce sourcing.
While Walmart is not alone in seeking greater supply chain visibility, its collaboration with Cropin represents one of the most significant deployments of AI-powered agricultural intelligence in large-scale food retail.
"As a champion and role model in the retail sector, Walmart has consistently set the bar by evolving best practices, not just for the company but for the sector as a whole," said Kumar.
With four large-scale carbon farming projects already in development and the first AI-powered crop forecasts expected to roll out soon, Cropin aims to bring millions of smallholder farmers into a more structured, data-driven supply chain.
"The last few years have been particularly promising, as stakeholders in the agri-food space recognize that technology in upstream agriculture is no longer a luxury but a necessity," Kumar added. "Our collaboration with Walmart reflects this ongoing shift, and we look forward to exceeding their expectations."
