Walmart-owned e-commerce company Flipkart has asked 300-400 poor-performing employees to leave the job as part of its annual performance review cycle, according to The Economic Times report.

According to reports, the company is estimated to employ around 20,000 people. Employees placed in lower performance bands during the appraisal process are typically asked to exit the organisation as part of the company’s performance management framework.

The affected employees are said to be from multiple teams across the company.

The company had undertaken a similar exercise in early 2024, when around 1,000 employees, or nearly 5% of its workforce at the time, were asked to leave following the annual review cycle.

Responding to the reports, Flipkart confirmed the development and said the process is part of its regular performance review cycle. It did not disclose the number of employees impacted.

“Flipkart conducts regular performance reviews aligned with clearly defined expectations. As part of this process, a small percentage of employees may transition from the organisation. We are supporting affected employees with transition support,” the company said in a statement.

Like several large internet companies, Flipkart sbeen focusing on improving operational efficiency and cost discipline in recent years as the broader startup ecosystem navigates a funding slowdown and increased pressure to move toward profitability.

The development also comes as Flipkart continues preparations for a potential public listing in India. Earlier reports said the company had begun early discussions with investment banks including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase and Kotak Mahindra Capital to explore the feasibility of a proposed IPO.
