Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has partnered with India's leading express logistics provider, Blue Dart, to launch an urban logistics service that aims to reduce road congestion and lower pollution in the National Capital Region.
According to DMRC, this project is the first of its kind in the entire South Asia Pacific region. It marks a strategic collaboration between DMRC and Blue Dart to promote more sustainable logistics.
By using spare capacity on metro trains during non-peak hours, Blue Dart can transport time-sensitive cargo at a faster pace while easing the burden on road traffic.
Cutting emissions and supporting sustainable transport
DMRC said the collaboration will reduce the number of delivery vehicles on already crowded roads, which in turn helps curb vehicular emissions. For DMRC, the initiative offers an opportunity to optimize resources and reinforce its commitment to environmentally friendly transport solutions.
The approach is in line with global trends, such as a pilot project by Madrid Metro to transport parcels underground instead of on city streets. DMRC is actively engaging with Madrid Metro to exchange insights and best practices in urban freight transportation.
Building a sustainable freight network
Under this plan, DMRC is leveraging its stations and tracks to create a more efficient freight network across Delhi-NCR. This involves setting up Micro Parcel Hubs and enabling both first-mile and last-mile connectivity through the metro system.
The aim is to shorten delivery timelines, improve operational efficiency, and adapt metro premises into centres for green logistics. DMRC intends to expand the cargo network to additional stations as part of its long-term vision for sustainable transport.
