Prior to the current deal, Masai School had acquired Bengaluru-based institute Design Shift Academy to offer courses in User Experience Design (UX) and User Interface Design (UI), in addition to its Full Stack Web Development course.

In March 2021, The edtech startup had raised $5 million as part of its Series A round from VC firm Omidyar Network India and other investors. Prior to that round, It had raised $2.5 million in a seed funding round on August 2020, led by Unitus Ventures, India Quotient, and AngelList India.

Founded in 2017 by IIT Kanpur alumni Ankit Agrawal, Amit Saharan, and Aman Singhal, Prepleaf offers 5-month-long courses in data and business analytics. Initially, The startup began its operations as a test preparation platform based on a survey conducted among the alumni of IIT Kanpur, which deep-dived into test patterns of companies who visited the campus for placements.

At present, Prepleaf has around 250 students enrolled in the Data Analytics test preparation courses. Like Masai School, Prepleaf offers courses through an income share agreement, where students study at zero-upfront fees and only pay if they earn more than Rs 5 lakh per annum, after course completion. Prepleaf’s average placement rate is 90% with an average salary package of Rs 7.5 lakh, the startup said.

On the other hand, Masai School specializes in providing job-oriented software courses. It provides both part-time and full-time coding programs in full-stack web development and android development. The startup follows the Income Sharing Agreement (ISA), Which allows students to pay the course fee after they get a high-paying job.

The Bengaluru-based edtech startup works with NBFCs to underwrite the student's program enrolled fees.

Masai School claims to have around 65% of its full-time students from non-computer science backgrounds with at least 20% joining after their 12th standard without undergraduate degrees. Over 70% of these students come from tier 2 and 3 cities. Engineering students usually opt for part-time courses, it said.

Masai School has more than 700 hiring partners which include Samsung, Sharechat, Urban Company, Instamojo, Airmeet, GlobalLogic, Lendingkart, Mobile Premier League (MPL), Nobroker, and Paytm.
