Gurugram-based fintech major Paytm has introduced the Paytm Solar Soundbox, a first-of-its-kind device in the country that harnesses solar energy for uninterrupted digital payments.

The new offering caters to merchants across India, especially those in rural and remote areas that experience frequent power shortages.

A solar-powered solution

The Paytm Solar Soundbox features a solar panel on top, which allows it to recharge even in minimal sunlight. The device has two batteries—one powered by solar energy and another by electricity.

According to Paytm, a 2-3 hour charge under sunlight can power the soundbox for a full day, while the electricity-powered battery can last up to 10 days without needing a recharge. The built-in Paytm QR code enables UPI and RuPay Credit Card payments, ensuring merchants have multiple payment options.

Designed for small merchants

Paytm says the Solar Soundbox is built to meet the needs of hawkers, cart vendors, artisans, and other small businesses.

The device provides real-time payment confirmations through a 3-watt speaker, making sure merchants do not miss alerts even in noisy environments. It supports audio notifications in 11 Indian languages and operates on a 4G connection for quick transaction updates.

Government endorsement

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary described the launch as a commendable step toward empowering small businesses and promoting sustainability, adding that it reflects the vision of a self-reliant and environmentally conscious India.

“The launch of this affordable Paytm Solar Soundbox is a commendable step towards empowering small businesses, especially those in remote areas. This also reflects the vision of a self-reliant and environmentally conscious India,” said Chaudhary.

Paytm Founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma said the initiative highlights the company’s commitment to innovation and financial inclusion, noting that the Solar Soundbox is designed to make digital payments seamless and accessible.

“With this Made in India device, we continue to pioneer transformative solutions that shape the future of payments in the country,” said Sharma.

Building on digital payment innovations

The launch of the Solar Soundbox follows Paytm’s recent introduction of the NFC Card Soundbox, which combines NFC technology and QR payments in one device.

Along with these hardware solutions, Paytm allows users to link their bank accounts, create UPI IDs, and make peer-to-peer payments through QR codes, mobile numbers, and direct bank transfers.

By expanding its range of payment devices, the company aims to support merchants nationwide and encourage the use of eco-friendly solutions in the growing digital economy.
