E-commerce major Flipkart is reportedly evaluating an entry into India’s highly competitive online food delivery market, according to an ET report.
The Walmart-owned company is considering a pilot program in Bengaluru around May or June. A broader rollout could follow by the end of the year or early next year, the report said.
As of now, there are two options are under active consideration. Flipkart may launch a standalone food delivery platform or roll out a buyer-side application on the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). The report further noted that the company is weighing both approaches. Flipkart has also begun building a team for the initiative.
This is not Flipkart’s first attempt at entering food delivery. Two years ago, it outlined plans to enter the segment through ONDC, similar to peers Ola and Paytm. That proposal did not move beyond the drawing board.
India’s online food delivery market, estimated at about $9 billion in fiscal 2025, is projected to grow to $25 billion by FY30, according to brokerage firm Jefferies.
The segment is currently dominated by Eternal-owned Zomato and Swiggy. Rapido’s Ownly and smaller players operating through the Indian government-backed are also attempting to gain market share.
Flipkart’s move comes amid rising competition across consumer internet verticals. The company entered the quick commerce space in late 2024 with the launch of Minutes. Over the past year, Minutes expanded its dark store network nearly fivefold to 500 locations. It is aiming to double this count to 1,000 by March 2026.
On the financial front, Flipkart Internet, the marketplace arm of Flipkart, reported a 14.4% increase in operating revenue to Rs 20,493 crore in FY25, compared with Rs 17,907 crore in FY24. Its net loss narrowed 37% to Rs 1,494 crore from Rs 2,359 crore in the previous year.
