In a twist that has sparked confusion over one of Tamil Nadu’s largest proposed industrial investments, Taiwan-based Foxconn on Tuesday refuted reports that it had committed a Rs 15,000 crore fresh investment in the state’s electronics and advanced manufacturing sector.
The clarification came a day after the Tamil Nadu government claimed that Foxconn’s India unit had agreed to the investment following a meeting between Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Robert Wu, the company’s newly appointed India representative.
Responding to a query from The Times of India, Foxconn said, “Foxconn’s newly appointed India representative Robert Wu had an exchange with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s office and his team. During the meeting, no new investments were discussed.”
The statement directly contradicted the Tamil Nadu Industries Department and Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa, who had publicly announced the investment on Monday (October 13) following the meeting.
The government had said the proposed expansion would create 14,000 high-value engineering jobs and enhance the state’s advanced manufacturing, R&D, and AI-led operations.
Rajaa, however, stood by the claim, insisting that discussions about the Rs 15,000 crore project “did indeed happen.”
His office clarified that while Foxconn may not view the proposal as a “new investment,” it was the first time the state had formally announced it.
“These investments were firmed up after a year-long struggle,” Rajaa said, adding that Foxconn likely considers the proposal a continuation of previous commitments.
A senior official from his team told NDTV that the company “does not consider this as fresh investment because talks have been ongoing for over a year.”
The controversy centers on whether the Rs 15,000 crore commitment represents a new project or an extension of an existing investment already cleared by the Tamil Nadu cabinet.
In May 2025, Foxconn unveiled a $1.5 billion investment in its Indian arm, Yuzhan Technologies, to build a smartphone display module manufacturing facility near Chennai, which had received state approval in October last year.
Despite Foxconn’s denial, both the Chief Minister and Rajaa celebrated the development on social media, calling it a milestone in Tamil Nadu’s industrial journey.
In a post on X, Rajaa wrote, “Foxconn will bring its next phase of value-added manufacturing, R&D integration, and AI-led advanced tech operations to Tamil Nadu. Foxconn commits Rs 15,000 crore in investments and 14,000 high-value jobs! Engineers, get ready!”

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also posted, calling it part of the “Dravidian Model in action” and a testament to Tamil Nadu’s rise as South Asia’s manufacturing and innovation hub.
This is the #DravidianModel in action. Thank you @HonHai_Foxconn for choosing Tamil Nadu and shaping the future with us.
