Germany-based semiconductor maker Infineon Technologies will be opening a new global capability centre (GCC) at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) in Ahmedabad.
The centre, which is the first of its kind in Gujarat and the company's second such facility in India, will focus on advanced chip design, product software, information technology, and other research and development initiatives.
The company plans to employ about 400 engineers at the site, underscoring the state's potential as a hub for high-tech investments.
Focus on semiconductor growth
Infineon's Chief Executive Officer, Jochen Hanebeck, said India is a strategic market for the company and will become even more important over the next few years. He added that Infineon has set a target of achieving 1 billion euros in annual revenues from its India operations by 2030.
"We have set ourselves an ambitious target to achieve Euro 1 billion in annual revenues in India by 2030. This target is a testament to our confidence in India’s potential and our commitment to contributing to its growth and development,” Hanebeck said.
Gujarat's Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also attended the inauguration event, highlighting the state's commitment to boosting technology development and job creation in the region.
“When we began thinking about setting up Infienon’s second GCC in India, we did not want to follow the conventional path of choosing another major technological hub. We wanted to be part of an emerging and unique ecosystem with a massive potential and create opportunities where they matter. Ahmedabad checked all the right boxes. Ahmedabad has been quietly transforming into a major tech hub beginning with fintech and more recently semiconductors. The fact that most manufacturing investments are happening around Ahmedabad is a testament to its potential to become the “Austin” of India, a major semiconductor design-to-manufacturing-hub,” Vinay Shenoy, MD, Infineon Technologies in India, said in an audio-visual presentation made at the event.
Support from Gujarat's GCC policy
The centre's launch comes shortly after the Gujarat government introduced a dedicated global capability centre policy. The policy aims to attract investments worth about Rs 10,000 crore and create 50,000 jobs. It aligns with the union government's larger effort to draw global semiconductor leaders to India.
Infineon already operates in Bengaluru, Noida, Pune, and Vadodara, making the new site in Gujarat its fifth location in India.
The company's new centre will play a key role in developing next-generation solutions in areas such as mobility, energy efficiency, and security. The company looks to support both local and global teams through its R&D and digital initiatives at the Gujarat facility.
