The Indian government is set to launch an upgraded version of the National Career Service (NCS) portal, known as NCS 2.0, in 2024.

The portal, as explained by Union Labour and Employment Minister Bhupender Yadav, aims to enhance job matching and search facilities for job seekers using the latest technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, PTI reported.

The evolution of the national career service

Originally launched in July 2015, the NCS has been a pivotal platform in providing employment-related services such as career counselling, vocational guidance, and information on skill development courses.

As of November 30, 2023, the NCS platform boasts over 3.64 crore registered job seekers, 19.15 lakh employers, and more than 1.92 crore listed vacancies.

Integration and expansion

The NCS portal is not just a standalone platform but is integrated with the facilities of 28 states and Union Territories, creating a comprehensive pan-India network. It also collaborates with various private portals like monster.com, Freshersworld, and HireMee.

Furthermore, it links with government portals, including Skill India, Udyam Portal (MSME), e-Shram, EPFO, ESIC, and DigiLocker.

Labour reforms in focus

In tandem with the launch of NCS 2.0, the government is also focusing on labour reforms. Minister Bhupender Yadav expressed optimism that states will start implementing these reforms in 2024. The reforms, encapsulated in four Labour Codes, aim to enhance the protection and social security of workers, including those in the unorganised sector.
