The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), under the Department of Space (DoS), has announced a new Seed Fund scheme aimed at supporting startups in urban development and disaster management using space technology.
The initiative marks a significant step in promoting space-related activities within India's private sector.
Financial and technical support for startups
Startups selected under this scheme will receive financial assistance of up to Rs 1 crore. Additionally, they will benefit from mentoring, training, and networking opportunities.
The funding is intended to help transform original ideas into prototypes, leveraging space technology. This includes access to ISRO facilities and Earth Observation (EO) data for concept validation, mentorship, and technology transfer from DoS.
Collaboration and application deadline
The scheme, launched in collaboration with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), is part of IN-SPACe's broader effort to enhance India's space capabilities with the active participation of startups.
The last date for applications is December 20, 2023. This initiative is expected to help non-governmental entities (NGEs) using space technology for societal benefits to advance to the next level.
Potential areas for Innovation
According to a press statement, The scheme opens doors for startups in various sectors. In urban development, areas like urban planning, infrastructure management, telecommunication, and climate monitoring are highlighted. For disaster management, startups can focus on GIS, early warning systems, and search and rescue operations, among others.
“The Seed Fund Scheme is a part of IN-SPACe's efforts to provide a special thrust to enhance the space activity capabilities of the nation with the active participation of the start-ups. This scheme is designed to support Indian space start-ups that aim to develop innovative space products and services, thereby improving the quality of life for people and communities in India and around the world,” said Pawan Goenka, Chairman, of IN-SPACe.
