UPI payment giant PhonePe's Indus Appstore, an Android-based platform, has swiftly crossed over 1 million installations within just a month of its launch.

Notably, the company said that 45% of its users come from Tier II cities and its success is attributed to its diverse range of app categories, including finance, games, and social media, which have shown considerable popularity among users, it said.

Embracing local languages

According to the company, One of the key factors behind the Indus Appstore's rapid adoption is its availability in multiple Indian languages such as Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Telugu, among others.

The inclusivity ensures that users from different linguistic backgrounds can easily navigate and use the app store.

Updates and future plans

Akash Dongre, Co-founder and CPO of Indus Appstore, said the company plans to release new updates every 10 days and aims to introduce features like video-led app discovery and voice search to streamline user journeys. For developers, enhanced merchandising tools and video-based app promotion opportunities are in the pipeline, promising a superior product experience for both developers and consumers.

Strategic partnerships

The Indus Appstore has established strategic OEM partnerships with Nokia and Lava and is in advanced discussions with several other major smartphone manufacturers.

These collaborations are pivotal to Indus's goal of pre-installing the app store on 250-300 million devices by the end of the year. Such partnerships will undoubtedly play a crucial role in achieving this ambitious target.

Indus Appstore, which was launched with the intent of creating a more competitive and localized mobile app store economy for India, offers over 2 lakh mobile apps and games across 45 categories.

Unlike other platforms that take a share from in-app purchases, Indus allows users to choose any third-party payment gateway for in-app billing without any commission.
