Quick commerce unicorn Zepto has rolled out an in-app UPI payments feature, allowing users to complete transactions within the Zepto app without being redirected to third-party payment applications, according to a Moneycontrol report.
The feature enables customers to authorise UPI payments directly inside the app, bypassing external platforms such as Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm.
While Zepto has not made a formal public announcement, the option has become available to a section of users.
Customers are required to link their bank account through the app’s payment settings and activate UPI, after which payments can be approved by entering the UPI PIN within the app itself.
The move places Zepto alongside food delivery peers that have built their own in-app UPI flows over the past year.
Swiggy introduced Swiggy UPI using the NPCI UPI plug-in framework, which allows users to complete transactions within the app after a one-time setup. The company earlier said the integration helps reduce checkout time and payment failures by eliminating app switching during transactions.
Zomato, meanwhile, rolled out its own UPI service in partnership with ICICI Bank, enabling users to create a Zomato-linked UPI ID and make real-time payments directly within the app. Unlike Swiggy’s plug-in-based approach, Zomato’s model functions more like a dedicated UPI handle issued through a banking partner.
For Zepto, which has been rapidly expanding its dark store network and order volumes, tightening the payments experience aligns with its broader focus on speed and reliability.
The rollout also comes as the company prepares for a public listing. Zepto has reportedly filed draft papers with market regulator SEBI to raise around Rs 11,000 crore through an IPO under the confidential route, with a potential stock market debut later this year.
