Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio is getting ready to introduce two new services that aim to make artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing more accessible for a wide range of users in India.

Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, spoke at Mumbai Tech Week on Friday, February 28, and outlined plans for JioBrain and a new cloud-based personal computer. He said both offerings will roll out “in the coming quarters” as Jio continues to fine-tune their features.

JioBrain to drive AI adoption

JioBrain was first announced at Reliance Industries Ltd’s 47th Annual General Meeting on August 29, 2024, with the promise of helping more developers and businesses use AI tools. The platform, described by Ambani as “machine learning as a service,” is designed to cut down the cost of adopting AI.

Developers and companies that lack the expertise or hardware to build AI systems will be able to use JioBrain’s resources instead of buying expensive infrastructure.

Ambani said JioBrain will start by supporting apps and services under the Reliance umbrella and will eventually expand to external partners that want to add AI to their products.

Cloud PC to simplify high-end computing

Ambani also revealed that Jio will soon launch a “Cloud PC,” which he described as a complete personal computer that exists in the cloud.

With a stable internet connection, users can access high-performance computing without having to own a powerful device themselves. This means people can run resource-heavy AI programs on remote servers, regardless of their hardware or operating system.

Ambani said the Cloud PC will be device-agnostic, so it can work smoothly on different brands of computers. He added that this is part of Jio’s broader plan to offer advanced computing tools to businesses, startups, and individuals across India.

Plans for AI and operating systems

Besides unveiling JioBrain and the Cloud PC, Ambani said Jio plans to reach 100 million users for its JioTele OS, which is designed to connect smart TVs. He hopes developers will use this platform to deliver “India-first solutions” to a massive audience in a short span of time.

Ambani also emphasized that AI is a vital technology for India’s future, predicting that it could help the country see sustained double-digit economic growth if managed properly.

Building talent

Ambani revealed that Jio has a full-stack AI team with over a thousand data scientists, researchers, and engineers. He noted that companies unable to adapt to AI may face a difficult road ahead. At the same time, he assured that AI will not wipe out jobs entirely but will instead change the nature of many roles.
