Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has joined the Indian government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), becoming the second metro service after Chennai Metro to adopt this innovative digital platform.

The partnership is set to transform the urban transportation experience by providing a seamless and efficient way for commuters to purchase tickets through various apps within the ONDC network.

KMRL said the is focused on enhancing convenience and accessibility and aligns with its commitment to delivering sustainable transportation solutions to Kochi's residents.

Through the ONDC network, Kochi Metro commuters now have the luxury of purchasing single and return journey tickets via four buyer apps: Yatri, Paytm, Rapido, and redBus, with the addition of PhonePe for an even broader selection.

The integration also opens the door to future expansions, including ticket bookings through Google Maps, Uber, and EaseMyTrip. The development is a part of ONDC's mission to create an interconnected ecosystem where various services, including metro tickets, can be accessed effortlessly in one place.

Sanjiv Singh, Joint Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade (DPIIT), and Sanjiv Loknath Behera, Managing Director of KMRL, both expressed their enthusiasm for this integration.

Singh sees it as a step towards a future where digital inclusivity can transform urban transportation into a personalized experience for every commuter.

By extending our ticketing services across a diverse array of buyer apps within the ONDC Network, we are significantly enhancing accessibility and convenience for commuters," said Sanjiv Loknath Behera, Managing Director of KMRL.

Behera further highlighted the potential for collaboration with ONDC to explore innovative avenues, including multimodal journeys and ancillary services, to elevate commuters' overall travel experience.
