Micron Technology signs MoU with Gujarat govt to Establish Semiconductor Facility

Gujarat, U.S. chipmaker Micron Technology is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a semiconductor assembly and test facility in the state.

The facility, located in Sanand, Ahmedabad district, will involve a total investment of $2.75 billion. This announcement was made by Micron on June 22.

The Gujarat government expressed its excitement about this partnership with Micron Technology. Micron's semiconductor assembly and test plant in Gujarat has been approved under the central government's "Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme." This scheme provides significant support to the project, with 50% fiscal support from the Centre and incentives representing 20% of the total cost from the Gujarat government.

According to Micron, the construction of the new assembly and test facility is expected to commence in 2023. The first phase, which will encompass 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, is projected to become operational in late 2024. The company stated that the facility will cater to the manufacturing of DRAM and NAND products to meet the demand from both domestic and international markets.

With the establishment of this plant, Micron envisions the creation of up to 5,000 direct jobs and an additional 15,000 community jobs in the coming years. The company believes that the facility will not only contribute to job creation but also address the growing market demand for semiconductor products.
