Nasscom, the technology industry body in India, has introduced a set of guidelines aimed at defining the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI).

These guidelines address the obligations of researchers, developers, and users of generative AI models and applications, with a focus on conducting thorough risk assessments and maintaining internal oversight throughout the lifecycle of such solutions.

The guidelines specifically target several key concerns, including misinformation, infringement of intellectual property rights, violation of data privacy, propagation of biases, large-scale disruption of life and livelihood, environmental degradation, and malicious cyberattacks.

To ensure the responsible development of generative AI solutions, the guidelines recommend cautious usage and risk assessment, paying attention to potential harms that may arise from deploying these solutions. Transparency is also emphasized, with the guidelines suggesting that developers publicly disclose data and algorithm sources unless there are legitimate concerns regarding public safety.

The guidelines further stress the importance of the explainability of the outputs generated by generative AI algorithms and the implementation of grievance redressal mechanisms to address any mishaps that occur during the development or use of such solutions.

Going forward, Nasscom said aims to promote awareness about these guidelines, develop specific guidance for different use cases, and enhance the existing responsible AI resource kit to facilitate the adoption of responsible AI practices.

Alkesh Kumar Sharma, Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, encouraged the technology industry to lead by example and embrace self-governance to bridge the gap between innovation and regulation.

Nasscom president Debjani Ghosh said the framework “is tremendously unique to India and is a proactive step towards building a transparent and robust roadmap for responsible build and use of AI".

In conclusion, Nasscom's newly released guidelines offer a comprehensive framework for ensuring the responsible use of generative AI in India, addressing key concerns, and advocating for transparency, risk assessment, and accountability throughout the lifecycle of AI solutions.
