Anupam Mittal on 0 income tax up to Rs 12 lakh income

Anupam Mittal and Nirmala Sitharaman

Welcoming the budget announcement related to tax exemption for people earning income up to Rs 12 lakh, Shark Tank India judge Anupam Mittal shared a humorous take on the new tax slab.

Reacting to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget 2025 announcement, Mittal took to X (formerly Twitter) and commented, “New definition of gareeb => income below 12.75 lacs a year 😜.”

Mittal’s post was a witty take on the revised tax structure, under which individuals earning up to Rs 12.75 lakh annually will now pay zero tax under the New Tax Regime. His reaction resonated with many middle-class professionals, who often feel burdened by taxation policies.

In a separate post on LinkedIn, the Shaadi.com founder elaborated on his stance, calling the budget a ‘systemic correction’ rather than just a tax cut. He expressed that for years, middle-class professionals had been heavily taxed while the ultra-rich found loopholes and businesses received tax breaks.

“Every Budget, same story > Hope builds up. Expectations rise. Then—another ‘Sorry, no relief for you.’ But Budget 2025 has come with a big shift,” he wrote.

Mittal further emphasized that the budget marks a major shift in India’s economic strategy, particularly for salaried professionals. He highlighted how historically strong economies have focused on empowering the middle class rather than overburdening them with taxes.

Citing examples, he noted that post-World War II, America’s economic boom was driven by a bet in its working class, and China’s rapid expansion in the 2000s was fueled by a thriving middle class.

According to Mittal, India has long followed a different path, where middle-class taxpayers have been consistently squeezed instead of being supported.

“Instead of fueling spending and investment, we kept squeezing our most productive taxpayers—the salaried class,” he wrote.

"This Budget shifts that. More disposable income = More consumption = More economic growth. 🚀 You don’t build an economy by making people feel gareeb. You build it by making them wealthier. 😎"
