NPCI International Payments Ltd. (NIPL), the international arm of India’s National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has entered into a strategic alliance with Magnati, a payments solutions provider in the Middle East.

The partnership is focused on advancing UPI acceptance in the UAE through Magnati’s point-of-sale (POS) terminals, making it easier for millions of Indian travellers to pay seamlessly using QR-based technology.

Bringing UPI acceptance to Dubai Duty Free

The collaboration will first bring UPI acceptance to Dubai Duty Free, offering Indian tourists a more convenient way to shop and pay. NIPL aims to extend this service to other key merchant categories, including retail, hospitality, transport, and supermarkets, over time.

With more than 12 million Indians visiting Dubai and the UAE each year, this expansion addresses a large market of customers already comfortable with UPI’s fast and secure real-time payment platform.

"Magnati’s partnership strongly connects to its commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions. By integrating UPI into its payment acceptance ecosystem, Magnati is demonstrating its position as a trusted partner for businesses across the UAE, enabling quick, hassle-free, and secure payment experiences for both merchants and customers," said Ramesh Cidambi, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Duty-Free.

Shared expertise and mutual benefits

As part of the partnership, NIPL will leverage Magnati’s merchant network to broaden UPI adoption, while Magnati gains access to NPCI’s digital payment innovations.

Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NPCI International, said the tie-up is a “strategic step” toward expanding UPI acceptance worldwide, adding that the seamless payment experience is expected to boost overall economic and cultural ties between India and the UAE.

Magnati’s Managing Director for Institutional Payments Solutions, Salim Awan, noted that the collaboration will “bolster digital payments, facilitate cross-border transactions, and provide a seamless payment experience for Indian travellers and NRIs.”
