Nutritionist urges Zomato, Swiggy to avoid using plastic containers

In a recent Instagram post, nutritionist Luke Coutinho urged restaurants and food delivery platforms such as Swiggy and Zomato to deliver food in biodegradable, non-plastic containers to avoid using plastic.

As a discussion unfolded in the comments section of Luke's post, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal responded by thanking the nutritionist for addressing the issue.

Luke wrote, "Swiggy, Zomato, restaurants: Please work with your partners to ensure food deliveries happen in biodegradable non-plastic containers. Many restaurants already do this; please make it uniform. Deliver food and health. Hot food in plastic is making people sicker. You have the power to help make a change."

In response, Deepinder Goyal said, "Thanks, Luke, for bringing this up. We will do what we can—will highlight restaurants that use food-safe packaging so customers can make a more conscious choice."

It's worth noting that plastic containers are harmful to health for several reasons related to chemical leaching and environmental impact. Many plastics contain chemicals like bisphenols and phthalates, which can leach into food and beverages, especially when exposed to heat or acidic conditions.

In a separate post, Luke also thanked Deepinder Goyal for acknowledging his concern. "A few days ago, we realized this concern as it is impacting health significantly. Thank you, deepigoyal zomato, for acknowledging this and moving to action. At the end of the day, it’s about coming together with a vision to build a healthier country. Thank you. My team and I are happy to help anytime," Luke said in his post.
