Ola Electric, a prominent electric vehicle company, has announced the commencement of construction for its 100 GWh gigafactory in Tamil Nadu. This exciting development marks a significant step forward in the company's mission to manufacture cutting-edge equipment and components for electrification and decarbonization technologies.
Today, Ola Electric proudly unveiled the installation of the first pillar of its cell factory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu. The company had previously signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government, committing to invest Rs 7,614 crore in the manufacturing of electric cars, two-wheelers, and lithium cell gigafactories within the state.
Spanning an impressive 115 acres, the Ola Gigafactory is slated to commence operations by early next year, boasting an initial capacity of 5 GWh (Giga Watt hours). Over time, this capacity will be gradually scaled up to an astonishing 100 GWh in phases, making it one of the world's largest cell manufacturing facilities, as per a statement from the company.
Founder and CEO of Ola, Bhavish Aggarwal, expressed his pride in this significant achievement, stating, "This is a proud moment for us as we installed the first pillar of our gigafactory today. Our gigafactory will be a major milestone in India's electrification journey, bringing us closer to making India a global EV hub."
Ola Electric's commitment to innovation extends beyond the gigafactory. The company has also invested in cell and battery research and development, establishing one of the most advanced cell R&D facilities in Bengaluru. Furthermore, in line with the memorandum of understanding, Ola plans to create an electric vehicle Hub, housing advanced cell and electric vehicle manufacturing facilities, vendor and supplier parks, and a comprehensive ancillary ecosystem for electric vehicles, all at a single location.
