PhonePe partners with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT features on its platform

UPI payment giant PhonePe has entered into a strategic collaboration with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT directly to millions of Indian users across its consumer and merchant platforms.

The partnership is aimed at accelerating the adoption of ChatGPT in the country and strengthening the product ecosystems of both companies.

Through this integration, PhonePe users will be able to explore ChatGPT’s capabilities within the PhonePe app, PhonePe for Business, and the Indus Appstore. The company believes the move will help people discover practical everyday use cases for generative AI, from planning trips to shopping assistance.

PhonePe said the collaboration will also enhance the overall platform experience by offering smarter and more relevant information to users. With generative AI adoption rising across India, both companies view this tie-up as an important step toward mainstreaming consumer-facing AI tools in the country.

Rahul Chari, Founder, Whole-time Director and Chief Technology Officer at PhonePe, said, “At PhonePe, we have spent years building the foundational layers for digital services at population scale. This strategic alliance demonstrates that collaborations between innovative companies in this space can help expand the reach of cutting-edge technology to the broader population. We are excited to partner with OpenAI to begin this journey.”

Oliver Jay, Head of International at OpenAI, said, “Our collaboration with PhonePe is a significant milestone in our mission to make AI more accessible to people throughout India. India is a global hub for innovation, and PhonePe’s deep understanding of the country’s fabric and its user base make them the ideal partner. This partnership will demonstrate the immense value of consumer AI across India, helping millions of users enhance their daily lives.”

The announcement comes at a significant moment for the Bengaluru-based fintech as it prepares for its public listing in India.

PhonePe confidentially filed its draft red herring prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Board of India in September and is reportedly targeting a $1.5 billion IPO that may value the company at around $15 billion.

Backed by Walmart, PhonePe has continued to scale its payments and digital services ecosystem. The company reduced its net loss in FY25 to Rs 1,727 crore from Rs 1,996 crore in FY24. Operating revenue rose 40% to Rs 7,114.8 crore from Rs 5,064 crore in the previous year.

As of March 31, 2025, PhonePe had over 61 crore registered users and a merchant acceptance network covering more than 4.4 crore merchants across the country. Its businesses span consumer payments, merchant payments, lending and insurance distribution, and a growing suite of new platforms including Share.Market, Pincode, and the Indus Appstore.
