Binoy Viswam filed a petition on SC asking to check the use of payments data by these platforms

  • Rajya Sabha member Binoy Viswam filed a petition in the Supreme Court to check the use of payments data by Amazon, GPay, and Whatsapp.
  • It was also written in the petition that the NPCI should examine the UPI transactions made on these platforms.
  • Binoy also wrote that NPCI should ensure the users that the information won't be shared with their parent company.

Rajya Sabha member Binoy Viswam has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to check the use of the user's payment data by Amazon, Google Pay, and WhatsApp.

It was also written in the petition that NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) should examine all the UPI transactions made by users in these platforms to avoid any misuse of the user's data.

Further, Binoy Viswam also stated in the petition that NPCI should ensure the user's that their payments data is safe and won't be shared with the parent companies.

Furthermore, Binoy Viswam said that these three Big tech companies operating their payments app without going into any scrutiny and claimed that these apps are violating RBI's and UPI policies.

In April 2018, the RBI with a view to secure the data of Indian users issued a circular directing all system providers to ensure that the entire data relating to payment systems operated by them are stored in systems only in the India region.

In a press statement, Binoy alleged that the RBI had watered down regulation mandating that data related to payments are stored in systems only in India to “help WhatsApp, Google” after they failed to comply with it by the October 2018 deadline. 

Earlier this year, Google Pay was alleged for having unauthorized access to BHIM Aadhar's (UPI) database. However, Google counter claimed that they don't need and don't have access to the user's aadhar database.

Moreover, In a statement, Google clarified that they don't the user's aadhar details to operate its digital payments wallet platform Google Pay.

On the other hand, Facebook-owned WhatsApp Pay is currently in the beta testing age. Facebook had partnered with Reliance Jio to integrate the buy and shop feature in their app, to make the shopping experience seamless and simple.
