US-base semiconductor company Qualcomm has announced an investment of Rs 177.27 crore to establish a new design centre in Chennai. The development, which was revealed at the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet, marks a major expansion for the chip designer in the region.

Focusing on wireless connectivity and 5G

According to a PTI report, the new facility will specialize in wireless connectivity solutions, particularly innovations complementing Wi-Fi technologies. It will also play a crucial role in Qualcomm’s global research and development, particularly in the field of 5G cellular technology.

This initiative is set to create job opportunities for up to 1,600 skilled professionals. The company will focus on leveraging the rich pool of talent in Tamil Nadu, known for its outstanding educational institutions and emphasis on innovation.

Savi Soin, President of Qualcomm India, emphasized the Chennai centre's pivotal role in shaping global connectivity and its importance in Qualcomm's 'Make in India' and 'Design in India' commitments. The company's expansion is expected to enhance collaboration with Indian technology partners and accelerate the adoption of new technologies in the market.

Qualcomm's collaboration with ISRO

In a related development, Qualcomm Technologies Inc. has expressed its support for India's navigation satellite system, NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), by integrating it into their upcoming commercial chipset platforms.

The company said the partnership with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) aims to improve geolocation capabilities and strengthen mobile, automotive, and Internet of Things solutions in the region.
