Two heavy spenders from Delhi and Dehradun together spent more than ₹20 lakhs on the platform this year, stocking up on essentials like atta, milk, and oil.

Below is a closer look at the key trends, big-ticket buys, and quirky consumer choices revealed by Swiggy Instamart’s data, collected from Jan. 1 to Dec. 1, 2024.

Big purchases and everyday essentials

Delhi & Dehradun Spenders: Two users together spent over ₹20 lakhs on Swiggy Instamart in 2024, with their carts brimming with kitchen staples such as atta, milk, and oil.

Nationwide Must-Haves: Milk, curd, dosa batter, chips, and soft drinks emerged as the top five items in baskets across the country. Notably, 1 in every 15 orders featured milk, and 1 in every 5 orders included fruits or vegetables.

Unique splurges and high-end buys

Pet Care Enthusiast: A customer in Mumbai spent over ₹15 lakh on pet supplies, mainly dog and cat food.

Tech Shopper: One user in Chennai shelled out ₹1,25,454 on gadgets, from gaming earphones to a hair straightener.

Mango Lover: A resident of Hyderabad spent ₹35,000 on mangoes in May.

Gold Gifter: An Ahmedabad shopper spent a record ₹8,32,032 on gold coins during Dhanteras.

Party in Delhi: Poker chips worth ₹4,60,000 were bought by customers in the national capital during Diwali.

Tonic Water Craze: In Mumbai, a single-day purchase of tonic water reached ₹8,20,360, while one user in Goa spent nearly ₹35,000 on tonic water this year.

Festive favorites and late-night cravings

Diwali Essentials: More than ₹45 lakh went toward brooms on Dhanteras, reflecting India’s tradition of Diwali cleaning.

Raksha Bandhan Deliveries: Close to 8 lakh rakhis were delivered, with one Mumbai user ordering 31 rakhis in a single go.

Valentine’s Day: On Feb. 14, an average of 307 roses per minute were ordered, making roses a top seller for last-minute romantics.

Late-Night Snacks: Between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., chips, ice cream, and cold drinks were the most sought-after items, while the 8-9 p.m. slot saw the highest demand for sanitary pads.

City-specific trends

Bengaluru: Topped the charts in purchasing both puja essentials and party supplies. The city also led in ordering underwear and sexual wellness products.

Mumbai: Ordered the most umbrellas and raincoats overall, and famously bought 4,500 kilograms of onions in just one hour on Dec. 1.

Hyderabad: Emerged as a snack capital, ordering ₹60 crores worth of instant noodles this year. Locals also favored the "Deliver Without Bag" option, indicating rising eco-consciousness.

Vizag: One user spent ₹27,742 solely on toys, showcasing that quick commerce can cater to playtime as well.

Behind the scenes of quick commerce

Fastest Delivery: Kochi recorded a delivery in just 89 seconds, delivering bananas and leafy greens over a distance of 180 meters.

Lowest Bill: A pencil sharpener priced at just ₹3 was the smallest single order of the year in Hyderabad.

Stealth Shopping: Top late-night “incognito” orders included masala chips, Kurkure, and flavored condoms—especially between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru.

Global Reach: Canada, the United States, Kuwait, and Singapore led international logins to send orders to loved ones in India, usually for milk, dosa batter, and water.
