Sriharsha Majety-led food delivery giant Swiggy, which competes with Deepinder Goyal-led Zomato, has introduced a “Fasting Mode” that allows users to pause food delivery notifications during specific hours of religious or cultural fasting.
The company said this feature reflects its commitment to user-first experiences and aims to offer more mindful choices throughout the year, beginning with Ramzan and extending to other fasting periods such as Navratri.
How it works
Once users enable Fasting Mode through the Swiggy app, they will no longer receive food-related notifications between Suhoor (pre-dawn) and 4 p.m. for Ramzan. When the fasting hours end, notifications resume automatically without any further action needed.
"Users can switch Fasting Mode on or off anytime from the Swiggy app. Once activated, food notifications will be paused between Suhoor (pre-dawn) and 4 PM for all users observing fasting during Ramzan Notifications automatically resume after fasting hours, without users having to turn them back on," Swiggy said.
The company said this approach is designed to help customers avoid the distraction of food promotions and updates while they are observing a fast, yet still gives them the option to quickly rejoin the platform whenever they want.
Special offers after fasting
Swiggy announced that once the fasting window closes each day, the platform will showcase top dishes and highlight special Ramzan meals, often with discounts of up to 50% off. A similar model will be rolled out for other festive periods.
According to the company, this option remains available year-round, allowing users to adjust their notification preferences for various religious and cultural fasting traditions.
Financial performance
Last month, Swiggy reported a net loss of Rs 799 crore for the third quarter of the 2024-25 financial year (Q3 FY25), higher than the net loss of Rs.574 crore in the same period last year.
During the reporting quarter, the company’s revenue from operations stood at Rs 3,993 crore, marking a 31% year-on-year increase from Rs 3,048 crore in Q3 FY24.
Its total income also increased by nearly 31%, reaching Rs 4,095.8 crore compared with Rs 3,130.9 crore in Q3FY24.
