American ride-hailing giant Uber has announced a partnership with Refex Green Mobility to deploy 1,000 electric vehicles in major Indian cities by 2026.

The move is part of Uber’s global plan to provide 100% emission-free rides by 2040 and strengthen its local effort to promote cleaner, more sustainable transportation.

Growing focus on electric mobility

Under the partnership, the new fleet of electric four-wheelers will be introduced on the Uber platform in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Mumbai.

The expansion is expected to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly travel, with Uber aiming to remove barriers to electric vehicle adoption and bring more people on board with zero-emission rides.

Aditya Kapoor, head of supply and electrification at Uber India and South Asia, said the deal with Refex Green Mobility, which operates under the brand Refex eVeelz, reinforces the company’s mission to reduce pollution in cities while giving riders a convenient and reliable travel option.

"It strengthens our efforts to electrify urban transportation, bringing more electric ride options to riders across many new cities in India. We remain focused on removing barriers to EV adoption and driving the transition to a greener future through partnerships that will build a sustainable future for all," Kapoor added.

Commitment to sustainability

Refex Green Mobility is a wholly owned subsidiary of Chennai-based Refex Industries Ltd and it operates under the brand Refex eVeelz.

Refex Group Chief of Staff Sachin Navtosh Jha said the collaboration with Uber is a chance to address growing concerns about urban carbon emissions while contributing to India’s larger environmental goals.

"This collaboration, in addition to our currently existing B2B as well as B2C operations with nearly 1,300 company-owned 4-wheeler EVs will help us contribute to reducing urban carbon emissions and will also play a key role in achieving India’s broader sustainability goals," Jha added.

Uber Green initiative

Uber has been taking other steps to introduce more electric and low-emission vehicles in India. Its Uber Green service, which allows riders to request an all-electric vehicle, is now available in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata. Globally, Uber Green is offered in more than 100 cities across 15 countries.

The American company entered the Indian market in 2013 with the promise of fast and easy rides. It now operates in 125 cities, offering ride options such as bike, auto, cars and even buses for different travel needs. It competes with Rapido and Ola Cabs in the Indian market.
