The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has partnered with Sarvam AI, an indigenous full-stack Generative AI (GenAI) startup, to enhance user experience, while availing Aadhaar services.

As part of the partnership, the Bengaluru-based startup will deploy the AI solution to perform voice-based interactions for resident-centric use cases. The system will allow Aadhaar holders to provide real-time feedback on their enrollment and update processes, including concerns such as overcharging by service providers.

Additionally, the AI will generate real-time fraud alerts for Aadhaar users if suspicious activity is detected during authentication requests, enhancing security and trust in the system.

Multilingual AI support for wider accessibility

Advertisment

To ensure broader accessibility across India's diverse linguistic landscape, the voice-enabled AI will initially support 10 languages, including Hindi, English, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Odia, Punjabi, and Malayalam.

UIDAI plans to expand the language options further in the coming months.

As part of UIDAI's data security measures, Sarvam AI has built a custom GenAI stack that is hosted on-premise within UIDAI's air-gapped infrastructure. This ensures that no data leaves UIDAI’s secure environment, maintaining full compliance with data sovereignty and security protocols.

The agreement is initially valid for one year, with an option for a one-year extension.

The initiative was developed under UIDAI’s volunteer policy, which facilitates collaborations with industry experts. Sarvam AI’s team worked closely with UIDAI’s Technology Centre in Bengaluru to design and deploy the solution, with UIDAI retaining full ownership of the AI system.

Leadership comments

"UIDAI is a people-centric organization. GenAI is the next technology evolution in UIDAI's journey as a technology pioneer, building on our long-standing commitment to innovation for facilitating ease of living," said Bhuvnesh Kumar, CEO of UIDAI.

"We are privileged to collaborate with UIDAI. This engagement exemplifies the immense potential of AI to drive public good," said Vivek Raghavan, Co-Founder of Sarvam AI.
