Edtech firm upGrad announced on Tuesday that it has entered the Pacific region by establishing its first-ever fully offline medical institute in the Republic of Vanuatu. The company has made an initial investment of $10 million in this endeavor. upGrad plans to set up three medical institutes in the region.
According to upGrade Co-founder and Chairperson Ronnie Screwvala, Vanuatu is positioned at the center of the educational revolution, making it a favourable geography for their business. Vanuatu, located in Oceania, is a nation consisting of approximately 80 islands in the South Pacific Ocean.
"We have a strong presence in Australia, and this move in Vanuatu, which shares proximity with Australia and New Zealand, will be a critical piece in strengthening our South Pacific footprints," Screwvala said.
upGrad's Institute of Medical Sciences (UIMS) in Vanuatu is a fully offline campus aiming to attract and train global talent with modern-day clinical competencies. The company's goal is to develop the next generation of skilled medical practitioners, as stated in their official statement.
The enrollment process for UIMS is expected to commence in the second half of June this year.
"This initiative is a part of our multi-campus strategy where we aim to set up at least three medical schools in the Pacific region along with a few more in select geographies," stated upGrad's Head of corporate development and M&As Gaurav Kumar.
In addition to providing quality education, UIMS will also foster talent mobility within the region.
The establishment of upGrad's offline medical institute in Vanuatu aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 12-point development agenda for the Pacific Island nations, which emphasizes healthcare, renewable energy, and cybersecurity.
By venturing into Vanuatu and launching UIMS, upGrad is taking a significant step towards revolutionizing education and making a positive impact on the global healthcare landscape.
