Meta-owned messaging giant WhatsApp has banned more than 99 lakh accounts in India during January 2025, according to its latest monthly compliance report. The Meta-owned messaging platform said the large-scale ban is part of its continued efforts to tackle spam, fraud and other misuse.

With millions of users relying on WhatsApp every day, the company faces a serious challenge in maintaining a safe and trustworthy environment for communication.

Proactive bans and user complaints

Out of the total accounts banned, around 13 lakh were removed proactively before receiving any user complaints. These bans were triggered by WhatsApp's automated systems, which detect suspicious activity such as sending bulk or automated messages.

In the same period, WhatsApp received 9,474 complaints from users across India, covering everything from spam to account misuse.

After reviewing these grievances, the company took action on 239 accounts, which included banning some and reinstating others if the complaints were found invalid.

Why accounts are banned?

WhatsApp has explained that these bans were enforced under India's Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

The platform's detection system operates at three different stages of an account's life: at the time of registration, while sending messages, and when responding to negative feedback such as user reports or blocks. A dedicated team of analysts also steps in to investigate unusual cases and improve the platform's monitoring methods.

The reasons behind these bans vary. Some accounts were removed for sending large volumes of unwanted messages, while others were caught spreading misinformation or using contact lists from unauthorized sources.

WhatsApp has repeatedly said that anyone who shares false information, harasses others, or engages in illegal activities may risk losing access to the platform.

India's IT regulations also require the company to publish monthly reports, ensuring transparency about the number of accounts banned and the nature of complaints received.
