X cuts Premium subscription price in India (2)

In a move to boost its paid subscriber base in one of its largest potential markets, Elon Musk-owned social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has sharply reduced subscription fees for users in India. The cuts, which range from 26% to 48%, apply to all tiers of X’s premium offerings, including Basic, Premium, and Premium Plus plans.

The most substantial price reduction has been made to the Premium subscription accessed via mobile apps, which now costs Rs 470 a month, down from Rs 900, a cut of nearly 48%. For users subscribing via the web, the Premium monthly fee has been lowered by 34% to Rs 427 from Rs 650.

App store commissions continue to keep mobile subscriptions priced slightly higher than web-based ones. Premium accounts come with a suite of features, including a verification checkmark, the ability to edit and write longer posts, and enhanced engagement tools.

The Basic tier, targeted at users looking for moderate upgrades, also saw a sharp drop. The monthly price now stands at Rs 170, compared to the previous Rs 243.75, a 30% reduction. Annual subscriptions under this tier have been slashed by 34% to Rs 1,700, from Rs 2,590.48 earlier. Basic accounts allow users to post long-form content, edit posts, download videos, and enable background playback.

The highest-end Premium Plus subscription, offering an ad-free experience and exclusive access to Grok 4, X’s proprietary AI model, has also become more affordable. On the web, the monthly cost has dropped to Rs 2,570 from Rs 3,470, a cut of about 26%. For mobile users, the price now stands at Rs 3,000, significantly lower than the earlier Rs 5,100.

X has not made an official statement detailing the rationale behind the pricing revision. However, the changes come amid broader efforts by the company to increase its paid subscriber footprint outside the United States and diversify revenue beyond traditional advertising.

The company’s Premium Plus subscribers—unlike Basic or regular Premium users—gain access to SuperGrok, a generative AI service, and can write full-length articles, positioning the tier as a publishing and productivity tool in addition to a social platform.
