Zoom considering legal action against JioMeet

Ever since the lockdown started due to COVID-19, the demand for video conferencing apps have been surging. Hence, Jiomeet- An Indian version of Zoom video-conferencing app, saw the best fit with respect to time, for its launch. Unfortunately, the newly launched app is almost a copy-pasted version of zoom. However, it had a million people download the app soon after its launch.

Legal action

Considering this act, zoom is planning on taking a legal action against the Indian app. Sameer Raje, India Head Zoom Communications, said that he was shocked at the resemblance between the two apps. “We knew it was coming. It’s fine, it is not the first time Zoom has faced competition. Our strength has been our products and technology, and our focus is on customers. What our competitors do is their strategy,” said Raje. Regarding the lawsuit he added further saying, "lot of discussions internally and I would not like to comment on this because it is a matter for my legal team to look into it and I will leave it for them".

Zoom has also been facing the difficulty of proving its originality that it is a non-Chinese app, from the time India banned such apps. Raje has also been trying to communicate to people about the security of their data. “We are an American company and we do not share data with any government. We have two data centers in India, people tend to forget that," Raje said.

Advertisment

Zoom was installed on around 6 Mn Indian smartphones out of the total 80 Mn installs worldwide during the first quarter of 2020. However, the Indian government warned people about the security issues regarding the app. In response to this, Raje commented,"We are not sharing data, we are sharing technicalities of our platform, how it operates".
