US-based chip maker Applied Materials planning to establish an R&D; facility in Bengaluru and is awaiting necessary approvals from the Karnataka government.
The company is in talks with the government to facilitate pre-construction approvals and to establish a Centre of Excellence for innovation and an R&D; lab at Whitefield.
The discussions, led by M.B. Patil, Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development, also touched upon the importance of chemicals and gases for the semiconductor ecosystem and the ease of doing business in the region.
In late June 2023, Applied Materials announced its plans to invest $400 million to build a collaborative engineering centre in Bengaluru, with a focus on developing and commercializing technologies for semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
