Bengaluru Metro's purple line begins its full operation; know the details

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) today commenced operations on the entire Purple Line of Namma Metro, connecting Challaghatta to Kengeri on one end and Baiyappanahalli to Whitefield on the other.

How will the new service impact commuters and traffic?

The Purple Line, which has 37 stations and covers a distance of 42.5 km can alleviate severe traffic congestion during peak hours, especially in areas like Whitefield that house numerous tech parks and employ individuals from various parts of the city.

The expectations from the new purple line

The BMRCL has projected that metro’s ridership will surge by 75,000 to 80,000 once the entire line becomes operational. The train services on the Purple Line will commence at 5 AM daily, with the last train departing at 10.45 PM from the Whitefield station.

During morning peak hours, trains will run at a frequency of 5 to 10 minutes on the Purple Line, and between the Majestic station and MG Road, train will be available every 3 minutes. During non-peak hours, trains will be available at a frequency of 8 to 15 minutes.

How BMTC is supporting the new metro line?

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has initiated feeder services from the KR Puram metro station to Central Silk Board, deploying 15 buses that were previously operated between Byappanahalli and K R Puram.

The move comes at a time when Bengaluru is witnessing an urgent need to enhance public transport facilities as it continues to face traffic and infrastructural issues.
