Apple's rival Samsung has announced its plans to begin manufacturing laptops at its Noida facility later this year.
Samsung is already manufacturing smartphones, wearables, and feature phones at its Noida factory. The expansion of manufacturing efforts is primarily intended for the growing Indian market.
The Indian government's push for domestic manufacturing, including restrictions on laptop imports and the introduction of the PLI 2.0 scheme for IT hardware, has played a crucial role in Samsung's decision.
The government measures, which are aimed at reducing dependence on imports, particularly from China, have encouraged companies like Samsung to localize their production.
TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, said Samsung has received support at various levels from the state and central government.
Roh stated that the company is preparing to commence laptop production in the country to support the 'Make in India' initiative.
The company will invest approximately Rs 100-200 crore to set up a laptop manufacturing unit in the region.
However, industry experts note that Samsung's role in the Indian laptop market is relatively small compared to leading players like HP, Lenovo, and Dell.
