Ecommerce giant Amazon India is gearing up to enter the competitive quick commerce market with its new delivery service, currently codenamed "Tez."
According to a Reuters report, the service is expected to launch by late December 2024 or early next year, expediting the company’s timeline from its earlier plan of a 2025 rollout.
Rising competition
The report comes shortly after Aadit Palicha-led Zepto, a major player in the 10-minute delivery market, raised over $1.3 billion in funding in the last six months.
Amazon’s entry is expected to intensify competition with rivals such as Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and Neu Flash, which Tata Digital has reportedly rolled out in select pin codes and cities.
It's worth noting that Amazon India's main rival, Flipkart, has already introduced its quick commerce service, Flipkart Minutes, earlier this year, scaling it to several major cities.
Developing infrastructure for quick delivery
The report mentioned that Tez’s rollout will likely mirror competitor models, beginning with groceries and daily essentials. To facilitate rapid deliveries, the ecommerce giant is developing infrastructure that includes dark stores, refined stock-keeping units (SKUs), and expanded logistics capabilities.
The company is also actively hiring for this high-priority project, described as a “ground-up initiative” in job postings.
