Technology giant Google has announced a new initiative to help local news publishers in India improve their digital operations and reach more readers. The Google News Initiative (GNI) Indian Languages Program aims to assist small and medium-sized news organizations in producing original news in nine languages.
Google said the program will provide training, technical support, and funding to eligible publishers.
With this, the company aims to empower publishers by offering tools and best practices to enhance user experience and generate more revenue on the web. The program includes virtual workshops and inspiration series on topics like website optimization, Core Web Vitals, News Consumer Insights (NCI), and YouTube.
Google also said that the selected publishers will undergo a diagnostic process to assess their website performance, including page speed and core web vitals, and some of them will also receive dedicated consultations and technical support to improve their user experience.
The GNI Indian Languages Program is open for applications until June 30, 2023. Eligible applicants must be small or medium-sized Indian language news organizations with an operational website, at least 12 months of continuous operation, and a minimum of 50 full-time employees. Applications will be evaluated by the Google Project team and external advisors.
This initiative comes at a time when Google is facing challenges from Indian authorities on various fronts, including fake news crackdowns and competition concerns. To strengthen its relations with the government, Google has taken several measures to expand its outreach program.
It is worth noting that Google is also under investigation for alleged market dominance in the news aggregation field. Several prominent media organizations have filed complaints with the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
