Nikhil Mittal

Zepto, the Mumbai-based quick-commerce unicorn, has elevated Nikhil Mittal to the role of Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Mittal, who was previously the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Engineering, has been with Zepto since its inception in February 2021.

What will be the role of Nikhil Mittal?

In his new role as CTO, Mittal will report directly to co-founder Kaivalya Vohra. The leadership change also affects the reporting lines of the Analytics and Data Science team and Chief Product Officer Ankit Agarwal, who will now report to Vohra.

Vohra, who previously held the CTO position, said, “In an unbelievably short period of time and with frugality, Nikhil has built out a high-performing engineering team from scratch and, more importantly, scaled himself to be an exceptional leader.".

Focusing on growth

Zepto has been on a rapid growth trajectory, becoming the first unicorn from India in 2023. The startup has made several strategic appointments in the past year, including Ankit Agarwal as Chief Product Officer and Viral Jhaveri as Chief Growth Officer.

Notably, These additions to its senior leadership team come as part of its preparation for a planned IPO and its ongoing expansion efforts.

Expansion of tech and engineering teams

Under Mittal's leadership, Zepto aims to expand its technology workforce, focusing on DevOps, quality assurance, cloud, and infrastructure teams. Co-founder and CEO Aadit Palicha highlighted the growth of the tech team from zero to 200 employees in two years.

The startup is also enhancing its technological capabilities with developments in warehouse management systems, search engines, and software for last-mile delivery partners.

Zepto, which turned unicorn last year, competes with major players like Zomato-owned Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, Reliance-funded Dunzo, and Tata’s BigBasket (BB Now).
