- Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea lost over 37 lakh customers and state-run MTNL also lost 5,457 mobile service customers.
Reliance Jio became the first mobile service provider to cross the 40 crore customer mark in India with a net addition of over 35 lakh subscribers in July, according to data released by telecom regulator TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) on Monday,
India’s overall telephone subscribers rose to 116.4 Crore in July from 116 Crore in June 2020, showing a 0.34% monthly growth rate.
Cell phone connections in the country jumped to 114.4 Crore in July from 114 Crore in June, with urban and rural connections standing at 61.9 crores and 52.1 crores respectively, as per the data provided by TRAI's the monthly subscriber survey.
Unusally, fixed-line connections increased marginally to 1,98,20,419, with private telecom operators led by Jio taking the lead.

However, public sector telecom companies BSNL and MTNL and loss-making private firms Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices continued to report declines in the fixed-line customer market.
At 40,08,03,819 subscribers, Reliance Jio now dominates India’s mobile market with a 35.03 percent market share.
Bharti Airtel and BSNL added 32.6 lakh and 3.88 lakh mobile customers respectively in July. Vodafone Idea lost over 37 lakh customers. State-run MTNL also lost 5,457 mobile service customers.
Dominated by the mobile market, broadband connections rose by 1.03% to 70.54 Crore in July from 69.82 Crore in June.
“Top five service providers constituted 98.91% of the market share of total broadband subscribers at the end of July,” the TRAI report said.
Talking about the numbers, Jio has 40.19 Crore broadband customers, Bharti Airtel has 15.57 Crore, Vodafone Idea (now known as Vi) has 11.52 Crore, BSNL has 2.3 Crore, and Atria Convergence has 16.9 lakh in July.
Jio is not only the market leader in the internet market but they are also creating a digital space to dominate.
Earlier in 2019, Reliance Jio claimed to have become the fastest operator to reach 300 subscribers milestone globally. Jio's market share, which is more than double of Bharti Airtel, shows the sheer dominance in the Indian digital space right now.
